Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

Take this opportunity to learn or refresh your memory of these Quranic facts.

  1. Who are the Ulul Azmi min ar Rusul and why are they called so? Which surah indicates towards the five Ulul Azmi min ar Rusul together?

The Ulul Azmi min ar Rusul were five prophets known especially for their firm determination in the path of Islam. They were:   Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Eesa and Muhammad (Peace be upon them all).

Allah (swt) says in the Quran:

So be patient, [O Muhammad (saws)], as were those of determination among the messengers and do not be impatient for them. It will be – on the Day they see that which they are promised – as though they had not remained [in the world] except an hour of a day. [This is] notification. And will [any] be destroyed except the defiantly disobedient people? [46:35]

The surah which indicates towards all these five Prophets is surat at Teen.

Allah (swt) says:

وَالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ

By the fig and the olive

The ancient Arabs would call a place by something which it was famous for. According to Ibn Abbas (ra), teen means ‘the Masjid of Nuh that was built upon Mount Al-Judi’ [ibn Kathir]

Zaytun refers to the masjid of Jerusalem. A lot of olive grows in Palestine. It is also the place where Jesus (as) lived.

وَطُورِ سِينِينَ

And [by] Mount Sinai

This is the mount on which Allah talked to Musa (as).

وَهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ الْأَمِينِ

And [by] this secure city [Makkah],

This is the city of Rasulullah (saws), and it is also a significant pointer towards Ibrahim (as), because the creation of this city was an answer to Ibrahim’s dua. The wording of the ayah itself resembles those of the dua:

وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَٰذَا بَلَدًا آمِنًا

And [mention] when Abraham said, “My Lord, make this a secure city… [2:126]

  1. Which surah in the Quran narrates a complete story of a Prophet’s life top to bottom without interruption?

Answer:

Surat Al Yusuf. This surah narrates the life of Prophet Yusuf (as). It was a gift to the Prophet (saws) during the most trying time in his life. His beloved wife Khadijah had died, his uncle, his stronghold in Makkah, had died as well. He had been rejected and abused by the people of Taif. At this juncture, the story of Yusuf and his lifelong sufferings was a warm comfort from His Lord.

  1. A woman came to the Prophet (saws) and complained about her husband. Allah revealed ayaat in answer to her complaint on the spot. What was the complaint, and which surah contains these ayaat?

This is the famous case of zihar. The name of the sahabiyyah was Khawlah bint  Tha`labah. One day her husband angrily said to her, `You are like my mother’s back to me.’ He went out, and after some time he was back and tried to have intercourse with her. She pushed him off and went to the Messenger (saws) with complaint. He (saws) said,

‘O Khuwaylah! Your cousin is an old man, so have Taqwa of Allah regarding him.’ By Allah! Before I [Khawlah] departed, parts of the Qur’an were revealed about me. Allah’s Messenger felt the hardship upon receiving the revelation as he usually did and then became relieved. He said to me, O Khuwaylah! Allah has revealed something about you and your spouse. He recited to me,

Indeed Allah has heard the statement of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah. And Allah hears the argument between you both. Verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Seer…..

Until ayah 4 of surat al Mujadila.

  1. Which were the ayaat which opened Umar’s (ra) heart to Islam on the spot?

Surat at Taha, 20:1 until:

Truly I, I am Allah there is no god except Me, so worship Me and establish the prayer for My remembrance. [20:14]
