A Dose of Surah for Depression

curiousitycorner

When a wave of depression and darkness overtakes us, it is difficult for us to appreciate the sun shine when it emerges from the clouds. It is even more difficult to be happy when overcome with sadness and burden weighs us down and makes us feel as if we have no one, we are not good enough, and there is no way we can ever feel better.

When feeling depressed, Surah Al-Baqarah shines light on the darkness we feel and gives us a glimpse of hope and Allah (swt) reminds us that we are not those who are deaf, dumb, and blind; Alhamdulillah! How wonderful it is to be a believer!

It could be worse— we could be unbelievers.

Before you feel all is lost and there is no hope, look around you and look for the signs of Allah (swt). Take a walk in nature and be reminded of His power as you feel the wisps of wind that brush across your cheeks. Now think of how grateful you should be to be a believer!

Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see. [2:17]

Deaf, dumb and blind – so they will not return [to the right path]. [2:18]

Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers. [2:19]

The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent. [2:20]

You may wonder how these ayats may take away your depression. Think of being unable to see the light, to understand the signs, and to ignore the mercy of Allah (swt). Sometimes it takes being reminded of things much worse before you can feel much better.

Trusting Allah (swt) with your Burdens

Allah (swt) can manage the affairs of every human being, every creation, every raindrop that falls from the sky. Allah (swt) is so great that He alone can handle our burdens, can take away our sadness, and how wonderful to know that the One and only is willing to shoulder all of our pain, our suffering, and sorrow, subhan allah!

Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. [2:255]

Finding Relief and being Reminded of Allah’s (swt) Greatness

What a relief to know that we are protected, provided for, cared for and loved! Allah (swt) knows our struggles and our pain, and knows our future just as He knows our past. How can we lose faith and hope when we remember Allah (swt) is on our side?

Allah is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light. And those who disbelieve – their allies are Taghut. They take them out of the light into darknesses. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein. [2:257]

Out with the Bad, in with the Good

Allah (swt) has also blessed us with Surah Al-Falaq, the daybreak, a beautiful dua to protect us from evil and darkness and to help us emerge from the depths of gloom we sometimes get trapped in. A perfect way to turn over a new leaf and face the day with a fresh face, masha allah!

Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak

From the evil of that which He created

And from the evil of darkness when it settles

And from the evil of the blowers in knots

And from the evil of an envier when he envies.” [113:1-5]

It is time now to let go. Take a deep breath and think of all of the burden, the struggle, the grief, the strife. Now breath out and let it go. Let your next breath be one of freedom, of faith, of light. Say Alhamdulillah! Look around you and feel Allah’s (swt) love, take a walk and appreciate his blessings, sign up for a course to start understanding quran in Arabic. Smile, it’s sunnah! Besides, how can you be depressed if there is always a smile on your face?

Praying you will benefit.

Say: Nothing can happen to us or save othe than that, which Allah had prescribed for us. Allah is our Protecting Friend. In Allah let BELIEVERS put their trust!
Remember Sura2( Al Baqarah) Ayah 286
Allah burdens not a soul beyond its scope. and then Sura 17(Al-IsraH) Ayah
And We reveal of the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy (Strictly)for BELIEVERS though it increase the evil-doers in naught save ruin.
    Finally Sura 20 (Thaha) Ayah 124
And whoever turns away from remembrance of Me(Allah), his life will be a narrow life(Stress, depression), and I(Allah ) shall bring him blind to the assembly on the Day of Resurrection
