Mirror, mirror on the wall . . .
What goes through your head while you’re getting dressed? Comments on your own appearance, questions about what to wear, or a remark that you never have “enough to wear?”
There’s something you can do every time you dress, something that only takes ten seconds but which has an amazing effect— the forgiveness of your past and future sins!
The Prophet (salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: Whoever wears a garment and says: ‘Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part’— is forgiven his past and future sins.
[‘Sahih al-Jami’ #6086, Al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ibn Maajah, At-Tirmidhi.]
What an enormous reward for simply recognizing that if it weren’t for the love of Allah you wouldn’t even have the power to provide yourself with a garment!
- Memorize this supplication and say it each time you dress (put on a garment).
- Remind yourself to say it each day by placing a sticky note on on your mirror or closet.
- Teach others this rewarding habit— especially children!
