Assalamualaikum Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Just like how we like to keep ourselves updated along the time, we must keep our Tajweed up to date. Meaning, there is more to the recitation of the Qur’an then just the words or tune and the rhythm.

The person who reads the Qur’an without Tajweed is like someone walking in a garden full of beautiful flowers and crushing those beautiful flowers cruelly just because he doesn’t know how to take care of them – Dr. AbdulAzeez AbdulRaheem.

So, we need to learn Tajweed, take care of it and brush it up time to time so that we are not making or repeating any mistakes knowingly or unknowingly in the recitation of the Qur’an.

Allah says: ’وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيل’and recite the Qur’an with measured recitation’’. (Surah Muzammil, Ayat # 3).

So, we are supposed to beautify our recitation with proper Tajweed applying all rules and characteristics properly.

Here are 8 tips to help you boost your Qur’an recitation in an easy way and in shortest time, Insha Allah.

  1. Pronunciation
  2. Intonation
  3. Quality of the recitation
  4. Articulation of the rules, characteristics, vowels etc.
  5. Breath, pause and stop at the right time
  6. Listen to other renowned reciters
  7. Understand what is being recited
  8. Teach others and master your Tajweed
  1. Pronunciation

The Qur’an is a whole book consists of Surahs and Surahs consists of Ayahs and Ayahs consists of words and words consists of letters. It starts with how correct you pronounce the letter which makes a word. You first need to understand the letters, their sounds, and its pronunciation which will help you so much in the proper recitation. So, you need to first practice the sound of each letter well.

Check our super fun and easy Tajweed poem HERE. This will help you utter each letter correctly and clearly, insha Allah.

  1. Intonation

The rise and fall of the reading and how you make voice/sound is also very important. You need to learn and understand when to increase the sound, when to slow down and where to silence in order to perfect your recitation. Following proper characteristics, signs and rules of Tajweed will help you much more in the proper recitation.

  1. Quality of the recitation

You are reading the blessed book on earth. The book loved by Allah Swt and His Prophet (ﷺ). So, the quality of the recitation matters too. A humble and soft recitation is the most beloved one than a fast track speed reading of the Qur’an which just doesn’t give any sense of what you are reading.

In fact, A study performed by Ghorbani et al. demonstrated that listening to the Quran recitation significantly reduced the anxiety level in the intervention group compared with the control group. The research of Qasemtabar et al. confirmed the results of study by Ghorbani et al. A study by Heidari and Shahbazi showed that anxiety level in nursing and emergency medicine students was significantly lower during exams with Quran recitation than the exams without it. And there are many more studies in this regard.

Subhan Allah! We are so blessed to be honored with the sacred book on earth i.e. the Qur’an.

  1. Articulation of the rules, vowels etc.

Tajweed is governed by some rules, like the utterance and sounds of the letters, hiding and opening of the letters etc. We must recognize each rule, giving every letter of the Qur’an its rights and dues of characteristics observing the rules. This is very important. Therefore, articulation while reading is very important for a flawless recitation.

  1. Breath, pause and stop at the right time

When your articulation of the word and each letter is on point then your Tajweed will also be in flow. Paying each rule its due is important. You need to follow each rule like, hiding and showing of the letter, the breathing, pausing and stopping of the recitation at the right time. Which makes the reading meaningful.

  1. Listen to other renowned reciters

When we are no experts in Tajweed, it’s always good and advisable to follow the experts. Keep a bunch of your favorite Qur’an reciters’ recordings handy and whenever possible, listen to them. Keep an MP3 in your car, and listen to it on the way, you can download some audios and videos and listen in your free time, watch Tajweed videos on YouTube. We have so many options, these days, Alhamdulillah!

  1. Understanding what is being recited

We are obligated to pay the Qur’an it’s due by proper reading and understanding of what is being read. If you could understand what you are reading, then nothing like that. Why to rely on translations or translators when we ourselves can understand the book of Allah? When you understand what you are reading then you will be able to recite from the bottom of your heart, putting all emotions. For this you need to learn then whole Arabic language, but you can just learn Qur’anic Arabic and start understanding the Qur’an in the shortest and most easy way. To know more click HERE

So, start teaching others, begin with your family members or friends and you can also start teaching kids at home. Help them learn basics of Tajweed, the rules etc. and you will never forget what you taught others.
