Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the past scholars had to walk every day for long distances in order to sit with a teacher. Nowadays it’s become so easy due to advances in technology. Therefore, let us make the best use of this rahmah Allah the Exalted has bestowed on us survivors in the Tech Era. There are plentiful of opportunities to choose from for anyone who is serious about studying Quran online. In this article I will present some of these.
Learning How to Read Quran
The first step towards Quran studies is learning how to read it. When we were children, we learned the alphabets of English and other languages easily and playfully. As adults it may be a bit harder to grasp the strange phonemes and shapes of the new alphabets and the structure of the new language. But don’t lose hope! Allah has said in the Quran:
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ
And We have certainly made the Qur’an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember? [54:17]
If we are serious, then Allah will make it easy. In UQ Academy we offer the course ‘Read Quran in 20 hours’. This course is very easy and enjoyable, using revolutionary ways of teaching.
Learning Advanced Tajweed Rules
For those who have mastered basic reading of the Quran, they are strongly encouraged to dig deeper into advanced rules of Tajweed. The Tajweed Made Easy course offered at IOU has that option.
Learning Quranic Arabic
Why learn Arabic? Because the Quran was revealed in Arabic, and learning its meaning in English is certainly not enough.
إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an that you might understand. [12:2]
Also,
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَنزَلْنَاهُ حُكْمًا عَرَبِيًّا
And thus We have revealed it as an Arabic legislation… [13:37]
Allah gave us the Arabic Quran so that we might understand. Therefore we are supposed to understand the Arabic Quran. The Arabic Quran is the uncreated speech of Allah, and if we want to know what Allah is saying to us, we have to learn Arabic.
For those who are too busy to travel in order to learn Arabic at a university, this is a great start: 50 % of the Quran in just 9 hours
You will study 9 hours in total, divided over 19 sessions in which you will learn 125 words that occur in the Quran 40,000 times (out of a total of approx. 78,000 words). That comes to 50%!
Complete Recitation of the Quran Individually with a Private Teacher
Read and Understand Quran 1 to 1 with qualified teachers. You will have one to four 30-minute Live classes every week, depending on which tier you select.
Memorization of the Quran
Yeah we can all memorize Quran at home, what’s the need for a teacher? The need is that, first of all, honestly, how serious are we about memorizing the Quran? Having a teacher puts a leash on our weekly memorization so that we don’t procrastinate. Secondly, memorizing Quran individually doesn’t guarantee accuracy of what you’re memorizing. A teacher will help you correct any repeated mistakes that you’re making. Find a Quran memorization course here: http://www.iou-gqmc.com/
Tafsir (explanation or exegesis) of the Quran
Learning tafsir in English is pretty easy. There are many speakers who have lectures on that topic. In bayyinah.tv you’ll find tafsir of the whole Quran and much more given by ustadh Nouman Ali Khan.
However, those who want to go deep in studying tafsir of the Quran need to learn Arabic first, because Arabic is the key that will open the door to a vast vast library consisting of 1400 years’ worth of scholarly work on the subject. That is one of the strong reasons for learning Arabic.
