Who are the victims of Islamist extremism? According to some accounts, those who’ve suffered the most from ISIS, for example, are Muslims. What’s even more bizarre is that ISIS members claim to have scriptural support for their actions.

As we wrote in a recent article, ”The Terrorist in the Quran,” the Quran doesn’t command Muslims to terrorise others at all, let alone other Muslims. It’s only Allah (swt) who righteously wields the power to create terror in the hearts of human beings. And for good reason.

Who is terror for, according to the Quran?

Terror is for disbelievers.

[Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, “I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip.” [Quran, 8:12]

Terror is for the ungrateful.

Allah sets forth a Parable: a city enjoying security and quiet, abundantly supplied with sustenance from every place: Yet was it ungrateful for the favours of Allah: so Allah made it taste of hunger and terror (in extremes) (closing in on it) like a garment (from every side), because of the (evil) which (its people) wrought. [Quran 16:112]

Terror is for warning evildoers.

And We refrain from sending the signs, only because the men of former generations treated them as false: We sent the she-camel to the Thamud to open their eyes, but they treated her wrongfully: We only send the Signs by way of terror (and warning from evil). [Quran, 17 :59]

Terror is for those who lack understanding.

Of a truth ye are stronger (than they) because of the terror in their hearts, (sent) by Allah. This is because they are men devoid of understanding. [Quran, 59:13]

Terror is a wake-up call for those who’ve always lied to themselves.

And the Book (of Deeds) will be placed (before you); and thou wilt see the sinful in great terror because of what is (recorded) therein; they will say, “Ah! woe to us! what a Book is this! It leaves out nothing small or great, but takes account thereof!” They will find all that they did, placed before them: And not one will thy Lord treat with injustice. [Quran, 18:49]

The Day when the Trumpet will be sounded: that Day, We shall gather the sinful, blear-eyed (with terror). [Quran, 20:102]

And the Day that the Trumpet will be sounded – then will be smitten with terror those who are in the heavens, and those who are on earth, except such as Allah will please (to exempt): and all shall come to His (Presence) as beings conscious of their lowliness. [Quran, 27:87]

The good news?

Believers are promised safety from terror on the Day of Judgment.

They will not be grieved by the greatest terror, and the angels will meet them, [saying], “This is your Day which you have been promised.” [Quran, 21:103]

Whoever comes [at Judgement] with a good deed will have better than it, and they, from the terror of that Day, will be safe. [Quran, 27:89]

_________

The tragedy of believers killed in the name of our beautiful deen will never be forgotten. Alhamdulillah, Allah (swt) promises them a glorious reward and freedom from fear forever. Let’s honour those lost lives by learning and spreading the Quran’s message of peace, good ness, and freedom.
