Salaam, and welcome to this new series about the best of humanity sent to all of mankind: our blessed Prophet Muhammad (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam; peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

The aim of this series is to explore events in the life of the noble Prophet Muhammad (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) and to learn how to apply his character, teachings, and lessons to every-day life.

Before we embark on this new journey, let’s ponder a few moments on the significance of saying sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam each time we mention his blessed name. With the right intentions, these words can be a source of immense blessing for us in this world and the Hereafter:

  • By sending blessings, we’re responding to the order of Allah the greatest. Both Allah and the angels send this greeting, which should in itself be motivation for us to follow their example.

Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace. [Quran 33: 56]

Anas bin Malik said: “The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever sends salah upon me once, Allah (SWT) will send salah upon him tenfold, and will erase ten sins from him, and will raise him ten degrees in status.” [Sunan an-Nasa’i, In-book reference: Book 13, Hadith 119]

  • Ibn Mas’ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “The people who will be nearest to me on the Day of Resurrection will be those who supplicate Allah more often for me.” [At-Tirmidhi, In-book reference: Book 15, Hadith 1398].
  • The Prophet himself (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam ) advised us to supplicate for him:

Aus bin Aus (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “Among the best of your days is Friday; so supplicate Allah more often for me in it, for your supplications will be displayed to me.” He was asked: “O Messenger of Allah! How will our blessings be displayed to you when your decayed body will have mixed with the earth?” He (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) replied, “Allah has prohibited the earth from consuming the bodies of the Prophets.” [Abu Dawud, In-book reference: Book 9, Hadith 1158].

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘May his nose soil with dust in whose presence mention is made of me and he does not supplicate for me.'” [At-Tirmidhi, In-book reference: Book 15 Hadith 1400].

‘Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned but he does not supplicate for me.” [At- Tirmidhi, In-book reference: Book 15 Hadith 1403].

  • Sending supplications for the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) is part of the etiquette of making dua to Allah:

Amr bin Malik Al-Janbi narrated that he heard Fadalah bin `Ubaid saying: “The Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) heard a man supplicating in his Salat but he did not send Salat upon the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam), so the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘This one has rushed.’ Then he called him and said to him, or to someone other than him: ‘When one of you performs Salat, then let him begin by expressing gratitude to Allah and praising Him. Then, let him send Salat upon the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam), then let him supplicate after that, whatever he wishes.’” [at-Tirmidhi, In-book reference: Book 48, Hadith 108]

The true beauty is that wherever you are in the world, the blessing reaches our beloved Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam):

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said, Do not make my grave a place of festivity, and supplicate Allah for me, for your supplication reaches me wherever you are. [Abu Dawud, In-book reference: Book 11, Hadith 322].

So as you read this series, I hope you benefit from knowledge that you can apply day-to-day, as well as reap the rewards of sending blessings upon our beloved Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) each time we mention his noble name.
