In this week’s central ayah Allah the Most Merciful says: If you were to ask them: “Who sends down water (rain) from the sky, and gives life therewith to the earth after its death?” They will surely reply: “Allah.” Say: “All the praises and thanks be to Allah!” Nay! Most of them have no sense. [Quran, 29:63]

More healthy, more productive, more beautiful

Allah ‘azza wa jall mentions water on many occasions in the Quran. Sweet water is a pure blessing for yourself and you probably know you should drink more water— but why?

Firstly, drinking water strengthens your health. It helps flush toxins from your body and aids digestion and fats will be eliminated from your body quicker. Secondly, water increases your productivity.  If your body gets dehydrated, not only your body will feel tired and weak, but your brain is also directly influenced! Many times it is not stress that causes you a headache, but your lack of drinking water. When you keep drinking water throughout the day you will notice you can focus more. Try it while learning and memorizing the Quran!

Thirdly, water can help you look better. The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: Allah is beautiful and loves beauty [Muslim] Looking after yourself is part of your deen. Water helps to hydrate your skin and also makes you feel more full, so you don’t overeat. Not for nothing did the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam say: There is no vessel which the son of Adam can fill more evil than his stomach, for it is sufficient for him to take a few mouthfuls in order to straighten his back, but if he must, then fill one-third with food, one-third with drink, and one-third with breath [Ibn Maajah]

How to remember Allah while drinking a glass of water

How many times do you truly remember Allah ‘azza wa jall when you drink a glass of water? Apart from physical benefits, there are amazing spiritual benefits of water, if you only open your heart. Here are six tips on how to truly feel your ‘alhamdulillah’ after you drink a glass of water.

1. Remember the One who gave you water.
Next time you drink water simply think about the One who enabled you to pick up the glass, the One who made sweet water accesiable to you so easily and the One who picked you to say ‘bismillah’ and ‘alhamdulillah’ when you drink it. What a merciful Lord!

2. Think about Paradise.
The first sip at Al-Kawthar given to you by the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam himself which will forever quench your thirst. The cooling and amazing flavoured drinking water in Paradise. The dazzling rivers flowing under your palace. Think about the waters of the Hereafter and let it motivate you each time again to have patience, strive and worship as best as you can! Rivers of water incorruptible; and rivers of milk unchanging in taste…[Quran, 47:15] and …In the garden is no idle talk; there is a gushing fountain… [Quran, 88:11-12]

3. Remember the Hellfire.
Water can also be a punishment. Imagine the people of Hellfire will be forced to drink scalding water which is called hameem and Allah ‘azza wa jall draws the image for us to reflect: and they will be dragged in fetters through boiling water [Quran, 40:72] and receive it over their heads [Quran, 22:19]. Whenever you are about to sin think about this and ask Allah ‘azza wa jall each day to protect you and your family from it!

4. Know the decision is with Allah.
The quantity and way Allah ‘azza wa jall sends it down from the sky determines if water in this world is a blessing or a suffering. The power and decision is with Allah: Who sent down water from the heaven in measure. . . [Quran 43:11] Think about a tsunami, floods, extreme hail etc.; reflect on your own security and be thankful for it!

5. Be thankful for wudu.
Allah ‘azza wa jall gave you water with which you can purify your body and soul before prayer. When you do ablution imagine the water washing away your sins and know that you are preparing yourself for a meeting with the Lord of the Worlds!

6. Share water.
As you can so easily grab a glass of water, there are those of your own brothers, sisters and children who cannot. Look for a sadaqah project which enables the needy to access safe drinking water and support it. You will know the true rewards in the Hereafter!

Action points

1. Drink more water.
The challenge is to remember to drink enough water in a day. According to research, if you are awake for approx 16 hours a day, you need to drink between 4.65 and 6.25 fluid ounces per hour. That’s about four to eight sips per hour. Tip: carry a bottle of water with you and fill one bottle at home with this amount, so you know you have to drink this by the end of the day.

2. Observe the etiquettes of drinking water.
You can even gain rewards by the way you drink water. How? By following the sunan, the ways of the Prophet: To sit and drink (excluded is ZamZam water), to drink with the right hand, to take 3 sips (or more in odd numbers and to say Bismillah before drinking [all saheeh Al-Bukharee].

3. Reflect while you drink.
And don’t forget to say alhamdulillah after drinking [At-Tirmidhee] from your heart! Pick at least one of above reflection points and apply them when you drink a glass of water. So truly remember the One who enabled you to drink— think of Paradise or Hellfire.
