Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

Ramadan is the month of worship, of fasting and tarawih and Quran recitation. The rewards of any good deed that you do are multiplied manifolds in this month of mercy.

However, there are those people who either can’t fast, or who just don’t have the energy or ability to stand for long recitations of the Quran in tarawih, or pray so many rakah of Qiyamul Layl, not because they’re lazy, but because they are given a trial by Allah. If you’re among this group of people, don’t feel sad or left-out. Ramadan is for everyone. If we can’t do one thing, we’ll do another! And may be Allah will reward us even more than the average person for our intentions and for finding a way around our sickness.

Here are a list of good deeds that can be done with ease and yet are highly rewarding. Choose the ones that suit you best and make a habit of doing them a lot during this blessed month.

Quran

Allah doesn’t describe the month of Ramadan as the month of fasting. He describes it as the month of Quran. It was the month in which Quran was revealed and in it Rasulullah (saws) and Jibreel (as) would study the Quran every night. Even if we can’t fast due to an illness, we still can make the most of this month by connecting with the Quran.

  1. Quran recitation and memorization from your tablets

There is a great app called “Quran Android” where you can browse the Quran just like the paper mus-haf, with the same exact page numbers. You can recite Quran from it at your ease, without wudu, while lying down, and even in darkness, and you can bookmark your progress in it.

  1. Reading a translation or tafsir of the Quran

You can either buy a translation or tafsir book, or you can download one online. You can easily find tafsir Jalalayn, ibn Kathir and Ma’riful Quran in English online.

  1. Listening to Quran recitation and explanations

Download the whole mushaf on your laptop or phone, etc, and then just lie back and listen to the divine words of Allah. You can also find a whole range of lectures on different surahs of the Quran done by ustadh Nouman Ali Khan on youtube and Bayyinah tv.

Remembrance of Allah

And those who disbelieved say, ‘Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say, [O Muhammad], ‘Indeed, Allah leaves astray whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him] – Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.’[13:27-28]

Other than the Quran, there are the following three ways of connecting with Allah.

  1. Tarawih: For those who can’t stand in tarawih, pray tarawih while sitting. Also, you can make tarawih as long or as short as you want. You don’t have to pray twenty or so. In fact the sunnah of Rasulullah (saws) is that he prayed eight rakaat of Qiyamul Layl. So just do whatever suits you.
  1. Dhikr
  1. I’tikaf at home

Other simple but highly rewarding activities that can easily be done anytime anywhere:

  • Istighfar

And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers. [71:10-12]

  • Salat upon the Messenger

Allah’s Messenger said: “Whoever sends Salat upon me, Allah sends Slat upon him ten times.” [Tirmidhi]

  • Charity

Allah’s Messenger () was the most generous of people in charity, but he was generous to the utmost in the month of Ramadan. [Sahih Muslim]

  • Gaining knowledge

  • Reading the biography of the Prophet (saws), the Sahaba and righteous people of the past.
  • Doing an Islamic course
