The following is an encouragement for those who may feel that learning the Qur’an is too difficult or will not bring great rewards.
The Importance of Qur’anic Learning
As a child growing up in Dubai, the Arabic language was a part of my school curriculum. However, as we all know, the Arabic in the Quran is far more eloquent than the everyday Arabic that is spoken and written. As such, I never quite knew how to link the language I learned to the Quran I read on a daily basis.
As the years passed, I would read the Quran regularly along with the translation but it would never truly penetrate and I would sooner or later forget the meaning of what I had read.
The Prophet (may peace be upon him) once said, “The most superior among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Quran and teach it.” (Sahih Bukhari)
You may wonder, “How can this apply to my life if I am not a scholar of Deen?”
Baby Steps
In 2010 I attended an Understanding Quran one-day course in Colombo. Subhanallah, that one-day course became the catalyst for my religious learning. Within a week I’d completed the rest of the course through self-study at home and could not believe that in just one week I had learnt the entire meaning of my Salah! Reading Salah took on a whole new meaning and made me reflect, understand and actually practice what I was reading in Salah.
If I could learn the meaning of Salah in a week, then surely I could apply the same techniques to learning the rest of Quran. This desire to learn grew in my heart and to this day I try to learn at least one word or ayah of the Quran on a daily basis.
Once you learn a few surahs, it will definitely boost your confidence and encourage you to do more. It is just as easy as learning any other language. Moreover, it is a great source of ajr and a means of success not only in this life but in the aakhira as well!
Passing it on
When can you start teaching what you have learned? And to whom should we teach it?
The answer to the first question is— today! Regardless of how much Islamic knowledge you have gained, each word or verse or hadith that you teach someone can bring you ajr until the end of time! You will never know the impact that your one word of Quran had on another person– that’s between them and Allah – but the reward will be yours as well.
Who can you teach? I have pondered over this question many times and it was when my child was born that the answer to this question dawned on me. Many of us may feel shy to approach strangers or even friends to pass on Islamic knowledge. If “charity begins at home” then so does education and the spreading of Islamic knowledge.
To summarise:
- Recognise the importance of learning and teaching the Qur’an.
- Begin studying. Try spending just fifteen minutes to half an hour a day to learn and understand even one ayah of Quran. Gain confidence!
- As soon as you start learning, pass the knowledge on. Begin with your own children if you have them, and move on to parents, other family members, friends, and then non-Muslims.
Take time to recognise the great blessings that enter your life when you study and teach the Qur’an.
MASHALLAH BARAKALLAH FI…

Salam aliakum, dear Aqsa. You know, Allah (swt) has told us through his messenger (pbuh)that he has made Islam easy for us. It’s we who make it difficult! Please, don’t be hard on yourself, and don’t be discouraged. Even if you are only taking baby steps, take them every day, striving with patience. Most importantly, pray that you will learn quickly and that the words will take root in your heart. If you already read but are concerned that you may be doing it wrong, you are like most of us! But elhamdolilah Allah is merciful with us while we are learning, always leading us gently and testing us only within our limits. Please take advantage of the courses we have to offer. You can also listen online to those who recite Qur’an, for example here: http://www.quranexplorer.com/quran. May Allah (swt) bless you in your striving.
Alihamdullilah may almighty Allah b wit u all
ALHAMDULILLAH, THIS IS GOING TO BE MY TURNING POINT INSHA ALLAH. MAY ALLAH REWARD YOU TREMENDOUSLY!!!
The ability to learn the Quran depends on ones educational level. Within 2 months of reverting to Islam I had gone through the Yusuf Ali translation of the Quran twice and comprehended most of what I read.
Alhamdulillaahi Rhobbil Alaamiin, Rhobbil Mashriki wal Maghribi,Rhobbil samaawati wal’Arzi, khaliku kuli shay bil haqi . Subhana wa t’ala.
Because I have a B.Sc. in Geology.
Before reading the Quran I believed Islam to be a strange invention of the Arabs without linkage to Judaism and Christianity. However the Quran has revealed to me that Islam accepts the messages of all prophets in the Jewish/Christian Bible with the exception of obvious distortions by the people of the book.
If you wish your life to be enriched, recite passages of the Quran constantly. (Quotations are from Yussuf Ali’s translation)
Surah 4:171: Yaaa-ahlal-kitaabi-O people of the book commit no excesses in your religion nor say nothing of Allah but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Marywas no more than a messenger of Allah…….
Surah 16:98-100 fa-izaa qara-tal Quran- When thou dost read the Quran seek Allah’s protection from Satan the Rejected one. 99-No authority has Satan over those who believe and put their trust in their lord. 100- Satan has authority over only those who take him as their patron and who join partners with Allah. Al -Mummini Ummah (O ye believers in the brotherhood) never join partners to Allah as the Christians do. Besides Allah there is no other power. Follow this rule and you will live a ‘charmed life’ like Ibrahim, Abu Musa, Dauda. All schemes of enemies against you will fail and you will be victorious in all battles. Alhamdu lillaahi khaliku samaawaati wal Arzi, Azeez, Hammeed, Rahkman, Raheem. Repeat constatly the Kaalimah Ashaadu anna la-illaha illallah wadahu la sharika lah, wa ashadu anna Mohammmadu abduhu wa rasulah to drive away the whisperings of Shaytan.
Enough is enough. Christians should cease to insult prophet Mohammed (PBUH, Sallah alahu alayhu wassallam). Instead of reacting violently Moslems should use words to ridicule Christianity without dishonoring any of our prophets. And this how it is to be done. (1) Tell the Christians that their faith has no foundations even using their Bible as a yardstick as follows
In Jeremiah 19:4-6: Jehovah says that he will bring disaster on Judah for offering their children as sacrifices to the god Molech (see also Leviticus 20:1-5). Human sacrifice is an abomination to Jehovah the God of Israel and Jesus.
Now Jesus manifested as a human being and hence his sacrifice as a human for the sins of mankind is also an abomination, null and void, and unacceptable to Jehovah (God) . So Christianity has no foundation and has been a dead religion from the beginning in AD 54 when saint Paul started propagating it.
Readers please spread this information. (2) Secondly tell the Christians that according to their Bible they are worshipping the devil as follows . Read Isaiah 14:12-20. An angel called Morning star by New Internatonal Version of the Bible (and called son of the Dawn and Lucifer by King James Version) said that it will make itself like the most high and raise its throne above the stars of God.
Read: Rev 22:16 and 2 Peter 1:19: The Jesus giving revelations to Peter and John of Patmos calls himself the Morning star, that is Lucifer.
Please, do not confuse this Jesus introduced by Saint paul and his followers with Jesus the son of Mary the last prophet sent to the Jews to correct their errors after the Jews have deviated completely from Siraati Lillaahi. The Jesus that calls himself Lucifer (Morning Star) was introduced by saint Paul(Butrus) who single handedly made him a Messiah whose sacrifice on the cross saved mankind.
Al Mummuni, please spread this information that Christians are worshipping Lucifer (the devil) in order to humiliate them completeley and destroy Christianity. It can now be understood why this Jesus told his followers that they will be forgiven all their sins if they believe in him and not if they do good.
God cannot make such a statement.
Assalamu aliakum. Dear brother, you make some excellent points, but we would discourage our brothers and sisters from attempting to “humiliate” Christians. As we Muslims know from experience, humiliating others does not lead them to the truth, and leading them to truth should be of higher priority. It is much more effective to show the common ground between us, to encourage them to read the Quran, and to show them by example the compassion, forgiveness, patience, morality, and wisdom that our religion teaches us.
My dear Wanda I am very sure you are not a Muslim. Which is better: Muslims regularly destroying human lives in reaction to insults thrown on our dear Prophet (SAW) by Anglo-Saxon Christians thereby ridiculing Islam in the eyes of the unbelievers as a violent religion or the humiliation of Christians whose faith contain numerous errors like Trinity (Thee gods but one) ? My dear may I remind you that the late Iranian Supreme leader Ayotallah khomenei (Raheem Mahuallah) described USA as the great satan which agrees with my post. “Bimillaahi Rahkmaan Rahiim,
Asalaam alaykum wa rahmatutaahi wa barakattuh’
Allahu wadahu la sharika la”
(In the name of Allah the most gracious, the most merciful peace be unto you and also the blessings and mercies of Allah, the one and only divinity that has no associate”
