Wearing hijab, or a head covering, is something that is obligatory for muslimahs, and for reverts and even born muslims alike it can be a very intimidating task. We are pressured by our culture and society, by friends and family, and worst of all Shaytan and his whispers.

We see other women who wear what they wish to please men and to be accepted. They show their hair and body parts because it makes them feel beautiful and confident, may Allah (swt) guide them.

As muslimahs, our beauty and confidence comes from what we do not show, and our covering is symbolic to our belief and desire for protection from our Wali. We wish to cover ourselves because we feel shame when men show us attention, and we wear what we hope will please Allah (swt).

What Wearing Hijab Means

We are taught as muslimahs to be modest. We should not only cover ourselves, but also watch our words and body language in an attempt to shield ourselves from the temptations of men. Our hijab is how we identify ourselves as believing women, and Allah (swt) is the most forgiving, so even when we are not perfect He tells us that when we are in doubt, to turn to Him.

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. [Quran 24:31]

How Hijab Protects

O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful. [Quran, 33:59]

Subhan Allah! How wonderful to have a source of protection from the perversion of the world. By wearing hijab, men look away instead of gawking and lusting. We cover our bodies so men will not be tempted and we will not be a target for lewd words and behaviors.

Hijab is a Gift

Allah (swt) has given us what we need to cover and be modest. Wearing hijab and concealing what gifts He has given us is a sign of humble obedience, love, and fear for the last day. Of all the clothes in the world, the best in the sight of Allah (swt) are the ones that cover and conceal.

O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness – that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember. [Quran, 7:26]

It can be hard to find clothing that isn’t too clingy or that doesn’t flatter our figures. Some clothes can be hot and uncomfortable worst of all glaring and rude comments make us feel insecure and make it tempting to just give up. If we keep our intentions good, Allah (swt) will forgive us for our faults and will help us overcome these obstacles, in shaa Allah.

Hijab the Right Way

We have to be careful that we are wearing hijab for the right reasons, and only to please Allah (swt). We should wear hijab because Allah (swt) tells us we should and because we want jannah and not the approval of a few in this life. We do not want to be as the disbelievers, declaring our belief and turning away from Allah (swt), who knows all.

Unquestionably, they the disbelievers turn away their breasts to hide themselves from Him. Unquestionably, [even] when they cover themselves in their clothing, Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts. [Quran, 11:5]

Wearing hijab is more than just covering our hair and our figures, it is a representation of who we are and what we believe. We must be mindful of our manners and our speech, our actions and our thoughts as we will be held accountable for all of these things on the last day.

Wearing Hijab with Confidence

Some muslimahs do not yet have the strength to cover, while others can confidently wear niqab and only show their eyes with no concern with how the world sees them. We should not look down on any of our sisters regardless, and should show love and support and help them overcome their fears any way that we can.

If you cannot yet cover, take steps to start wearing clothes that are less form fitting and work your way up. Spend time around sisters who are positive and supportive and make lots of dua and pray for Allah (swt) to bless you and other muslimahs like you with the courage to shed the burden of society’s sly remarks and indecent expectations of women.

Don’t feel intimidated at school or at your job, and don’t let peoples laughter and jokes deter you! We are more beautiful to Allah (swt) because of our hijab, so who cares what anyone else thinks, says, or does? If you lose something because of wearing hijab, just know that Allah (swt) will provide something in it’s place that will be better for you, in shaa allah.

And whoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty) and He will provide him from sources he never could imagine.” [Quran, 65:2-3]

Praying you will benefit.
