Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

We look for miracles in absurd, weird, out of the way things. When a frail woman gives birth to an immature baby and, despite all odds, the baby and mom both survive, we call that a miracle. But what about the miracle of birth itself? Just because it is so common, it doesn’t cease to be a miracle. So let us try to see the miracles in small things, common things. Allah (swt) said in the Quran,

And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees, [growing] several from a root or otherwise, watered with one water; but We make some of them exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason. [13:4]

Allah is the Creator of all animals. He has given each animal some unique characteristics, and from each we can learn different things. From ants we can learn industry and discipline. From turtles we can learn that slow and steady wins the race! Similarly, I have learnt some really amazing and helpful characteristics from my cats. Here they go:

  1. Cats can make friends very easily.

It’s not just the fact that they’re so cute. It’s their nature that does it. They make friends quite easily with other cats, and with humans. Even people who hate cats, when they’re forced to live around one, they become cat lovers. They’re sweet to you, always happy, and they’re clean. They don’t keep grudges on you even if you slapped them. In fact, if they sense that you don’t like them, they’ll often redouble their efforts to make you friends, until the point when you really can’t resist anymore. Whose nature does this remind you of?

  1. Cats go out of the way to show their love.

They never sit back and assume, “yeah they already know that I love them, so what’s the big deal? Why do I have to prove to them that bare fact again and again?”  They come and cuddle with you often, they walk around the house with you asking for food (by the way they never demand for it, i.e. throw you on the floor, put their sharp claws around your neck and ask, “wheaz ma food? Can’t you see I’m hungwy?” ), they become sad when you’re going out, they become happy when you come back.

And their strongest weapon is– their purring. They purr and make you realize how much pleasure you’re giving to them. And now let us think, when was the last time we showed this kind of love to our spouses? Our moms? Our brothers and sisters? Would there be any relationship problems and bitterness if we could always be like this?

  1. Cats don’t give up easily.

You’re probably familiar with the saying “Curiosity killed the cat.” It’s not really far-fetched when you come to think about it. They are extremely curious and explorative. And when they are up to something, they never give up after one unsuccessful try. They try and try again and keep trying, until it becomes quite clear that it’s an impossible job, whereupon they instantly give it up.

  1. When something doesn’t work, they don’t brood over it even for a second.

They don’t go to a corner and wallow, “Oh I’m good for nothin’!” Instead they seem to forget all about it and go on exploring other places.

  1. Cats are fighters!

You’ll be surprised how much a cat can endure. They’ll fall off roofs, get hurt under chairs and other crazy places their curiosity takes them. Kittens particularly can become very sick very easily. But they never give up. If one of their legs is hurt, they walk with the other three legs. And the moment that leg gets better, they start running! One of the most touching of my memories is when my kitten was so sick it couldn’t walk, and it was trying to drag itself somehow to the potty and refused to let go.

  1. They make others happy.

Just looking at adorable activities brings a smile to your face. Point to ponder: how many people can say the same about you?

The people most beloved to Allah are those who are most beneficial to the people. The most beloved deed to Allah is to make a Muslim happy, or to remove one of his troubles, or to forgive his debt, or to feed his hunger. [Mu’jam Al-Awsat 6192, Hasan lighayrihi according to Albani]
