Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

Have you faced the situation where you tried to correcet a mistake someone was doing, or tried to tell someone something is haram or something is obligatory, and that person asked you, ‘What’s the proof of that?’ And you were silenced, or you stuttered out something like ‘It’s in the Quran’ or ‘in the Quran it says such a such.’ Where in the Quran? ‘Somewhere at the end, I don’t remember.’ You are told to bring the proof and then talk. But it’s not always handy to bring such proofs out of thin air any time any place. That’s why it’s very useful to have some of the verses of the Quran and ahadith about the basics of Islam memorized, so that you can pull them out easily while giving dawah.
With that goal in mind, I have compiled the following texts for memorization for those who are serious about presenting the message of Islam to people.

Obligations

    •    Salah
Where does it say we have to pray five times a day, everyday?

Allah , the Exalted said: I made five times’ prayers obligatory on your people, and I took a guarantee that if anyone observes them regularly at their times, I shall admit him to Paradise; if anyone does not offer them regularly, there is no such guarantee of Mine for him. [Abu Dawud]

    •    Salah at its proper time
Some people pray all their day’s salah at one go at night. This is for them:
So woe to those who pray [But] who are heedless of their prayer. [107:4-5]
. . . Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times. [4:103]

•    Hijab in front of non-mahrams, and the fact that cousins are not ‘just brothers and sisters’
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women . . . [24:31]

•    Maintaining relationships with kins
The word ‘Ar-Rahm’ (womb) derives its name from ‘Ar- Rahman’ (i.e. Allah). So whosoever keeps good relations with it (womb i.e. Kith and kin), Allah will keep good relations with him, and whosoever will sever it (i.e. severs his bonds of Kith and kin) Allah too will sever His relations with him. [Sahih Al Bukhari]

Prohibitions

•    Backbiting
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful. [49:12]

•    Talking about Allah without proof
Have you heard people say, ‘Allah does not tell us to wear hijab anywhere in the Quran,’ or ‘Allah will forgive me even if I drink alcohol.’ This is sheer denial, we don’t want to admit that we’re doing wrong, so we attribute it to Allah.
Say, “My Lord has only forbidden immoralities – what is apparent of them and what is concealed – and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know.” [7:33]

•    Being arrogant and looking down on others
He who has, in his heart, an ant’s weight of arrogance will not enter Jannah.[Muslim]
