In the last article we looked at five of the beautiful names of Allah (swt) and how they affect our lives. Now we’ll look at some more of these names.

  1. At Tawwab

The fa’aal form in Arabic language denotes consistent repetition. At Tawwab is someone who forgives you and keeps forgiving you, someone to whom you can return anytime. Remembering at Tawwab will help us never feel too guilty to turn back to Allah, because no matter how bad our actions become, Allah forgives it all.

Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah . Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.’ [39:53]

Remembering at Tawwab also helps us develop a forgiving nature, because Allah likes forgiveness more than revenge. He said,

And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation – his reward is [due] from Allah . Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers. [42:40]

If someone harms you, it is completely halal for you to get your exact revenge. But it is infinitely more preferable to forgive. Imagine, if Allah dealt with us as we deal with others, where would we be? If He can forgive all our wrongdoings, why can’t we forgive others?

  1. As Saatir

Satr is a veil. As Saatir is the one who puts a veil over those deeds of yours that you’re ashamed of. He doesn’t expose that dark side of ours which we’re constantly hiding from others, perhaps even from ourselves. He keeps giving us chance to get our acts together, and He covers all that happened in the past which we wouldn’t like to think about. Remembering as Saatir will make us grateful if we reflect on the innumerable instances when He could have exposed us to the world but didn’t. It will also make us less judgmental of others’ faults.

. . . Whoever covers the faults of a Muslim, Allah will cover his faults in this world and in the Hereafter . . .[Muslim]

  1. Ar Razzaq

And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision, and He knows its place of dwelling and place of storage. All is in a clear register. [11:6]

Ar Razzaq is the one whom we forget quite easily. We get used to the fact that we’re well fed, have a comfortable bed to sleep in, have loved ones who care of us, and we forget the fact that all these innumerable comforts were provided to us by Ar Razzaq by His infinite mercy.

And We have certainly established you upon the earth and made for you therein ways of livelihood. Little are you grateful. [7:10]

Remembering Ar Razzaq is also very easy. All we need to do is be aware of the fresh breath of air we are inhaling, and where this air came from; of the easy beating of our hearts and who is making it beat; of the different things stored in our refrigerator and who provided them. Remembering ar Razzaq will of course make us grateful and content for what we have, instead of looking out for things we don’t have.

We can do this for all the names and attributes of Allah swt. Those attributes were taught to us by Allah and His Messenger (saws) not just for exercising our brain cells with some extra knowledge. They were given to us for a purpose – each of these gems is supposed to impact our lives in unique ways. Can you find out these lessons from the other asma al husna?
