Our Task on Earth

Allah (swt) has sent us to this world with a specific purpose. He has not abandoned us. He is always with us, answering our prayers and leading us out of our struggles and confusions. Our task here on earth is to follow His guidance in every situation and return to Him with our hearts in good shape.

The Holy Quran teaches us numerous supplications right from the first page. We are instructed not to hesitate to ask from Allah (swt). “When My servants ask you about Me, say that I am near. I respond to the call of one who calls to Me: let them, then, respond to Me, and believe in Me, so that they may be rightly guided.” [Quran, 2:186].

Prisoners of the Past?

Some of our actions or wrong decisions may put us in a tough situation. We can unwittingly become prisoners to our past. In other cases, society and other external factors can create hostile situations for us. In any case, turning towards Allah (swt) is the best way forward. His Mercy can turn the situation on its head and bring seemingly impossible things within our reach.

Prophet Muhammad (saws) took the mantle of preaching Oneness of God in the tough Arabian soil. Allah (swt) taught him various supplications from time to time to assist in his mission. Following is one example. “Say, Lord, grant me an honourable entrance and an honourable exit, and sustain me with Your power” [Quran, 17:80]. Subsequently, Prophet’s migration to Medina proved a huge blessing in his life and in his mission.

Keep Asking, Even if You Think it’s Your Destiny

This tells us the importance of supplication. Something can be in our destiny. Still, it is imperative to ask for it. One important benefit of Dua is that it makes our hearts humble. When we see good results, we will dedicate it to Allah’s Mercy, instead of taking pride in our efforts.

Once Prophet Moses (saws) was in deep trouble. Verses 15 to 23 in Surah Qasas describes his problem. Then he turned towards God and said this prayer. “Lord, I am truly in need of whatever blessing You may send down for me” [Quran, 28:24]. He submitted his needs completely to Allah (swt). This prayer changed his life. He got a livelihood, a good mentor and later, he received prophetic mission.

Our worst misery can be a blessing in disguise, provided we know to pray to our Lord. Learning to supplicate with all humility can make our life much easier. Holy Quran has examples of numerous supplications made by different Messengers at different times. It includes both personal needs and that needed for the mission. The words they have chosen shows us their wisdom. They provide enormous hope and guidance for us. Let us earnestly submit our needs to our Lord and receive huge favors.
