Being a Teacher of the Quran

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

All Muslims are students of the Quran. It is obligatory to recite Quran in prayers, and so every Muslim memorizes at least some verses of the Quran in order to be able to offer their prayers. We all know the great rewards associated with learning the Quran, reciting it and memorizing it. What is not that often considered is the teaching of the Quran. Teachnically we all have the capacity to become teachers of the Quran, because we know some part of the Quran which we can easily pass over to others.

Why Become a Teacher?

Allah the Exalted said in the Quran:

… Do not worship except Allah ; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah…. [2:83]

Allah orders us to speak good to people, and what are better words than the words of Allah?

The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those – Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. [9:71]

Enjoining right and forbidding evil is only possible when we know what it right and what is evil in the first place, and the source of that knowledge is the Furqan, the Quran.

By default, human beings are in a state of loss, except:

Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience. [103]

Therefore it is necessary for us to convey the Quran to others in order to come out from the perpetual state of loss.

Ali ibn Abi Talib radiyallahu anh said, ‘Knowledge calls for action, so either the call is answered or [knowledge] will take off.’

Who can become a Quran teacher?

Anyone who has the slightest knowledge of Quran can become a Quran teacher. The Prophet (saws) said, ‘Convey from me, even if it be an Ayah.’ [Tirmidhi]

However, it is absolutely forbidden to teach the Quran without sure knowledge that what you’re teaching is indeed in the Quran. Allah says,

Say, “My Lord has only forbidden immoralities – what is apparent of them and what is concealed – and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know.” [7:33]

What is the benefit of becoming a Quran teacher?

Do you want to be the best? Have a look at the following hadith:

The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it. [Sahih Al Bukhari]

This hadith itself is enough motivation to start teaching the Quran. The Prophet further said,

Do not wish to be like anyone, except in two cases: (1) A man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously. (2) A man whom Allah has given wisdom (knowledge of the Qur’an and the Hadith) and he acts according to it and teaches it to others. [Sahih Al Bukhari]

Imagine that you teach five people one verse of the Quran each, and they use that verse in their prayers for a week. You will get the rewards of their recitations everytime they recite it, because the Prophet said,

Whoever teaches some knowledge will have the reward of the one who acts upon it, without that detracting from his reward in the slightest. [ibn Majah]
