Laylatul Qadr According to the Quran and Sunnah

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

This one night is so special that Allah the Exalted dedicated a whole surah on it:
إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ
Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree.
And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree?
The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.
The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.
Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.

The Blessings of Laylatul Qadr

    •    It is the date of the coming down of the Quran.
We know that Allah sent down the Quran bit by bit to His messenger (saws) via angel Jibreel over about two decades. Then what does it mean that the Quran was sent down on Laylatul Qadr? According to ibn Abbas (ra), the sending down of Quran referred to in this surah is its coming down from the Lawh al Mahfuz (Preserved Tablet) to the Baytul-`Izzah (House of Might) in the first heaven. ‘Then it came down in parts to the Messenger of Allah based upon the incidents that occurred over a period of twenty-three years.’

   •    This blessed night is better than a thousand months. The Prophet (saws) would say:
Verily, the month of Ramadan has come to you all. It is a blessed month, which Allah has obligated you all to fast. During it the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are shackled. In it there is a night that is better than one thousand months. Whoever is deprived of its good, then he has truly been deprived. [Ahmad] A thousand months! That’s more than eighty three years. It means that if you pray two rakat of voluntary prayer on this night, you will get the reward of praying two rakat voluntary prayer every night for eighty three years— that’s a lifetime!

    •    Have all your past sins forgiven!
Whoever stands (in prayer) during the Night of Al-Qadr with faith and expecting reward (from Allah), he will be forgiven for his previous sins. [Sahihayn] Aisha (ra) said, With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to tighten his waist belt (i.e. work hard) and used to perform Salah all the night, and used to keep his family awake for Salah. [Bukhari] •    Thousands and thousands of angels descend upon earth and come to those engaged in worship.
Ibn Kathir says, The angels descend with the descending of blessings and mercy, just as they descend when the Qur’an is recited, they surround the circles of Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and they lower their wings with true respect for the student of knowledge.

•    It is the Night of Decree.
Allah says in another place in the Quran:
حم o وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ  o  إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ  o  فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ  o  أَمْرًا مِّنْ عِندِنَا ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ.
Ha, Meem. By the clear Book, Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. On that night is made distinct every precise matter – [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger]. [44:1-5] According to Ibn Umar and others, ‘On Laylatul-Qadr, the decrees are transferred from Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz to the (angelic) scribes who write down the decrees of the (coming) year including life span, provision, and what will happen until the end of the year.’ [ibn Kathir]

In order to really taste the sweetness of prayer, we should at least try to learn something about what it is that we are reciting, and find out how it relates to us personally. The best way to do that is to learn Arabic, and here at Understand Quran you will be taught 50% of Quran in just 9 hours.
