And the Answer is . . . Al-’Azeez!
About the Meaning
Allah calls Himself Al-‘Azeez, The Almighty, 92 times in the Quran. This repetition tells you that you constantly have to remind yourself that Allah is the One who is mighty; you can never go against His Will and He is mighty against those who disobey Him.
Al-‘Azeez is the One who has overcome everything in that He has subdued it, and He has overcome all things. [Ibn Katheer] Part of its meaning is that Al-‘Azeez is the invincible who cannot be reached and overcome. [Al-Qurtubi]
Linguistically, this name is said to have three verbal forms which point to different meanings. One is ya’izzu, which means nobility. Allah (glorified and exalted be He) is the noble One, and there is none is like Him. One is ya’uzzu which means to prevail, to be dominant. Allah (glorified and exalted be He) is Ghaalib, dominant and prevailing, and no one can ever conquer Him. And the third is ya’azzu which means to be powerful, to be mighty.
The word ‘al-Izz’ originally means strength (quwwah), severity (shiddah) and conquest (ghalabah).
A Beautiful Poem About This Name
Ibn ul Qayyim raheemahullah wrote in his Nooniyyah:
And He is al-Azeez whose (status) cannot be reached (overcome)
How can He be reached, the owner of all Power?
And He is al-Azeez, the Overpowering (al-Qaahir), the Subduing Overcomer (al-Ghallaab)
Nothing overcomes Him, so these are two characteristics
And He is al-Azeez, with Strength (quwwah) and this is His description
Al-Izz, therefore, has three meanings
And these are the ones that are perfected for Him, free is He of all imperfection,
From every single aspect, the One who is devoid of any deficiency.
Allahu akbar— beautiful!
Another connotation of Allah’s might is that He is Al Muntani’ (mana’ means to stop); nothing can go against Him; no one can fight Him and push Him back.
A Powerful and Wise Combination!
How many people have power but misuse it?
The combination of these two names “Al -‘Azeezul Hakeem” appear 47 times together in the Quran! Allah al-Azeez is Al Hakeem (the All Wise) with His power. He knows what to do, where to do it, and when to do it.
Other combinations are Al ‘Azeezul ‘Aleem (The All Mighty, The All Knowing), six times in the Quran. Al ‘Azeezul Ghafoor ( The Almighty and The Most Forgiving), twice in the Quran. Al ‘Azeezur Raheem, 12 times in the Quran. Other examples are Al ‘Azeezul Ghaffaar and Al ‘Azeezul Hameed.
The Quran is Also Called ‘Azeez’
In Surah Fussilat, ayah 41-42, Allah(swt) has named His Book Al-‘Azeez:Verily, those who disbelieved in the Reminder (the Qur’ân) when it came to them (shall receive the punishment). And verily, it is an honourable respected Book. Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it (it is) sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise.
How Can You Live by This Name?
1. Have faith in The Almighty!
He is unbeatable. He is Mighty. Having faith in this Name gives you courage because you know Your Lord cannot be prevented from fulfilling what He wills. Whatever He wills happens, even if the people will otherwise, and whatever He wills not will not happen, even if the people will it. So we should only work to seek His pleasure and be confident He will help us. He has power over all things, so accept whatever happens to you and show sabr and shukr!
2. There’s no hiding from Al-‘Azeez.
When Yunus (as) left the city without an order coming from Allah, he was stuck in Whale. We can learn from this Name that we need to recognize that no matter who you are, how pious you are, Allah is al-‘Azeez amd you can never hide from His presence.
3. Know that your ‘izzah is in Islam!
Your honour does not lie in money, power, or looks. Your honour is only in Islam.
What do you do if you want to have honour in this life and the next? You should obey Allah and His Messenger; only then you will reach that. Allah is the owner of the world and hereafter and to Him belongs all power and honour.
How many seek honour from other things? Allah al-Azeez said, Those who take disbelievers for Auliyâ’ (protectors or helpers or friends) instead of believers, do they seek honour, power and glory with them? Verily, then to Allâh belongs all honour, power and glory. [An-Nisa, ayah 139].
4. Power doesn’t mean honour!
Use your own “power” in an honourable way. Even when you have a position of “power” over your own children, don’t misuse this power. True power is when you are able to restrain yourself in times of anger, when you have the strength to resist desires and withstand temptations, when you struggle in the path of Allah.
5. Use the Quran, al-’azeez!
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala called the Quran ‘azeez because it is His speech. Stop and reflect. This means the Quran contains everything which we need to know to succeed in life, because it comes from our Creator. It is our manual and why is a manual read? Only because you want to make something work. So don’t just read the Quran but also use it as your manual!
Wallahu ta’alaa ‘alem.
O Allah, Al Azeez, adorn us with the honour of Islaam, protect us from misusing our powers, make us of those who rely upon Your power only, make us benefit from the Quran and protect us from all of those who want to overpower us, ameen!
