The Quran is no doubt the most important book on the planet, a book that we need to connect with for our survival and success in this life and the next. It is, after all, the direct word of our Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) to mankind, given to us as a huge mercy through our beloved prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم). One cannot even begin to fathom the miracles, the inspiration and the guidance Allah has blessed us with through this Noble Book.

However, so many of us struggle on a daily basis to read it, to stay connected to it, and to understand it. We may have learned to read basic Arabic, and memorized several surahs which we recite frequently. Yet, the idea of learning Quranic Arabic as a language to enhance our understanding and deepen our connection with the Quran seems like a daunting task, one that we feel we may not be able to achieve in our lifetime. Sounds familiar?

Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) himself has made a promise: “And We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” (54:17). And Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) also says: “If My slave comes nearer to me for a span, I go nearer to him for a cubit; and if he comes nearer to Me for a cubit, I go nearer to him for the span of outstretched arms; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.” (Sahih al-Bukhari: 7536). So it is important for us to prioritize our relationship with the Quran and to know that Allah will help us with that journey. Remember that every great scholar started as a beginner at some point and there is no reason why we cannot follow the same footsteps, there is no reason why we cannot build a stronger understanding and connection with the Quran and get closer to Allah (سبحانه و تعالى).

Here are 7 top tips for those who want to embark on a journey with the Quran and learn Quranic grammar.

1. Intention – One of the most important starting points. Make the intention to learn and pray to Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) to help you with this journey. The purpose of your learning is for the sake of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) alone, to help you understand and learn what His guidance is to us and ultimately bring you closer to Him. We ask Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) to help us gain the knowledge, to make it easy and to remove any difficulties.

2. Connect with a good teacher/institution for your learning – There are many courses, both online and in person available to you. Finding a good institution with qualified teachers is important. For many of us, we are faced with the demands of daily life. Therefore, finding an institution that works with your lifestyle is key. A range of online courses is available where you can learn at your own pace, be supplied with resources, have one to one classes and access to support.

3. Make it a priority – Once you have found a good teacher or enrolled in an institution, it is important to manage your time well. Too often, your learning can be compromised due to other demands in your life. Make it a key priority and create time and space every day to learn, to review and to practice what you learn.

4. Memorize – Arabic grammar studies will require you to memorize rules and charts that will help you to better understand Quran and build your knowledge. After every class, when you are required to memorize something, make sure to do it! Dedicate time to review what you have learned every day. Print out the charts, stick it on your wall, diary, car or make up a song, create mind maps etc. Whatever it is, just do it! Memorizing as you progress is important. Otherwise, it may become difficult to understand the following lessons.

5. Read Quran – Read it in Arabic and start applying what you have learned. As you start understanding more about how Arabic grammar works, you will gradually notice that you are better able to connect with and understand the Quran. At some points, you may feel you don’t have enough Arabic vocabulary. One useful tip is to create yourself a glossary. Every time you come across a new word, jot it down and its meaning. Having a copy of a translated Quran is useful, too. The main thing is not to worry, as you will pick up plenty of vocabulary along the way. Initially, it is crucial to understand how the Arabic grammar works, so learn the charts and rules and apply what you learn when you read Quran.

6. Be okay with making mistakes – Approach your assignments with a positive outlook. Give it a go and don’t worry about making mistakes, as you can learn so much from them. The important thing is to review your work, understand what the mistake is, correct it and learn from those mistakes.

7. Don’t worry, be happy! – As you embark on this journey, there will be many times that you will feel doubt, you will feel you don’t have enough Arabic vocabulary or you will feel that you haven’t fully comprehended a rule. The key thing to remember is that this is normal. More importantly, you are doing this for the sake of Allah. So study at your own pace but stay consistent. If you don’t understand something, ask your teacher or team up with your peers. You can set up a Facebook or Whatsapp group for collaborative learning. The more you preserve, prepare, practice and have patience with yourself and your learning, the further you will get. Remember it is not a race, you just need to learn the rule, apply, practice, and know that Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) is behind you on this journey.

May Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) bless your journey with the Quran and help you grow closer to Him through it. Dive into the ocean of mercy and knowledge. Happy learning!
